Although Northampton Martial Arts draws from many different styles, we mainly focus on Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do, with it’s “take what works” philosophy, is a constantly evolving amalgam of many martial arts that is not limited to a traditional repertoire. Our curriculum includes: punching, kicking, blocking, patterns, one-steps, sparring, grabbing, escaping, standing, falling, rolling, jumping, ground techniques, weapons work, stretching, meditating, and analyzing the physics and philosophy of our art and it’s history.
I've been going to Northampton Martial Arts for about 2 years. All I could say is all the experience I've had is positive. Simon is very funny, intelligent, friendly, and the best martial art teacher.
Mr. Scher always wanted to be a taekwondo teacher. He studied not only martial arts in college but also business, military science and Korean language and history. He runs workshops around the world on taekwondo, the world's most democratic sport . I'm obviously biased because my son has worked with him for six years. But I know kids love working with him. His family classes bring people of all ages together.
Great teacher, very understanding, little dorky but extremely knowledgeable in his field of Martial Arts. Prices are reasonable and community is fun. Safe space to practice and have fun. All are felt welcomed.
Exceptional learning environment. Sabunim Simon Scher educates students' on proper movement and use of specific techniques.
Amazing instructor! Very gifted, funny, and kind. We've attended classes combined for 3 years now. So beneficial mentally, physically and spiritually!
My daughter has been attending Northampton Martial Arts for 1 1/2 years. In that time, she has significantly increased her focus, balance, stamina and confidence. Simon makes the classes fun. He is firm but not overly serious, at least with the classes for the little ones (she's been going since she was four). Classes are conveniently scheduled and I love the flexibility he offers- my daughter goes 2 times per week and we can choose whichever nights work for us each week. We don't have to commit to a specific class. This is a great plus for our chaotic lifestyle. What I really wanted to share was our experience with a birthday party event at Northampton Martial Arts. Simon took care of everything - from customized invitations and decorations, to food, beverages and cake, to the goody bags- it was all included. We just needed to show up and enjoy. The kids were mesmerized. He had a mini martial arts class and a mix of games, exercises, and slapstick comedy. Everyone was energized and laughing. Two of the highlights was cutting the cake with a huge sword, and my daughter having the opportunity to break a board with a kick. He also gave us a quick demo of what they could do if they became a black belt some day. It was very inspiring. Many kids were talking about how much fun they had had. One mom told us that it was the best kids birthday party that she had attended. I would not be surprised if a couple of the children showed up as new students. I highly recommend Simon Scher and Northampton Martial Arts for both Tae Kwon Do classes and for kids' parties. You will not be disappointed!
My whole family has been training at Northampton Martial Arts for two years. The kids learn confidence and how to push themselves and I'm learning to balance and be aware of my body like I never have before. I work hard for every belt (I'm a purple belt after two years, but only train once a week), but it's worth it.
Northampton Martial Arts is one of those gems that make a huge different in life. Studying tae kwan do with Simon has changed my grandson's life and therefore all of ours, teaching him focus, discipline, skills, perservance, how to look at things from multiple perspectives simultaneously. I can't recommend it highly enough!
